Michael Eugene Rhodes, Jr.
GRANTSVILLE - Michael Eugene "Mike" Rhodes Jr., 69, Grantsville, passed away on Tuesday, Feb. 11, 2020, at Martinsburg VA Medical Center, Martinsburg, W.Va.
Born Sept. 18, 1950, he was the son of Michael Eugene Rhodes Sr., Oakland, and the late Mary Geneva (Goss) Rhodes. He was also preceded in death by a grandson, Andrew Fike; his step-mother, Beatrice Rhodes; a step-brother, Edward Roy Bennett.
Mike was a self-employed brickmason. He was a member of the Bricklayers Local Union 15, W Va, Fairmont, W.Va, for 48 years. Mike served in the United States Marine Corps as a sergeant; was a life member of Mountainside Marines Detachment 1071, Cumberland, serving as Paymaster; a life member of Vietnam Veterans of America, Chapter 172, Cumberland, a member of the Grantsville American Legion Post 214, Grantsville, where he served in the Honor Guard; President of the Restless Ridge Hunting Club, Accident, competed in the Marine Corps League rifle matches in Marriottsville, Indiantown Gap, Pa., and Zanesville, Ohio, competed in National Rifle matches in Butner, N.C., and Camp Perry, Ohio, and various other competitions earning quite a few shooting medals. Mike enjoyed hunting, fishing, taking long walks in the wood, shooting on the rifle range with his buddies, and spending time with his close friends and his grandson Zach.
In addition to his father, he is survived by four daughters, Anita J. Rhodes and partner, Gail Hebb, Oakland, Maria J. Friend and husband, Carl, Swanton, Janice L. Sweitzer and husband, Bill, Oakland, Kelly D. DeWitt and husband, Chuck, Oakland; one brother, Jim Rhodes and wife, Lois, Swanton; two half-sisters, Pam Combs and husband, Steve, Morgantown, W,Va., Lori Davis, Oakland; one step-sister, Mildred O'Haver and husband, Buddy, Oakland; eight grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren; several nephews and nieces; two rescue and faithful canine companions, June and Chance.
A procession will begin at Newman Funeral Homes, P.A., 179 Miller Street, Grantsville, at 12 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 18, 2020, to carry Mike to his final resting place at Rocky Gap Veterans Cemetery, 14205 Pleasant Valley Rd., Flintstone, where a graveside service with military honors will be held at 1 p.m.
Newman Funeral Homes, P.A., 1100 Memorial Dr., Oakland, is in charge of his arrangements.
