Peter "Pete" Charles Smith Obituary
Cumberland, Maryland - Peter "Pete" Charles Smith, 73, of Cumberland, Md., passed away on Saturday, April 25, 2026, at the Martinsburg VA Center.
Born May 11, 1952, in New York City, N.Y., Pete was the son of the late Martha Hemminger. He was also preceded in death by his brothers, Jack and Bobby Batch; and his sisters, Marty Pichelli and Maude Kulon.
Pete was raised in Johnstown, Pa., and later moved to Cumberland, Md., in 1989. He was a huge Pittsburgh Steelers fan and would have rivalries with his Ravens-loving stepchildren. Pete was in the U.S. Navy from 1970 to 1972. He was employed at Unitel in Frostburg, Md., as a sales representative before becoming a disabled veteran, forcing him to leave.
Pete is survived by his wife of 35 years, Gayle (Curry) Smith; his stepchildren, Tracy Ott, Melissa Grapes (Robert), Michael Scell (Sarah); his brother, Richard Smith; his grandchildren, Kaitlyn, Evan, Maddyson, Nevaeh, Paxtin and Cohyn; as well as numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.
Friends will be received at the Adams Family Funeral Home, P.A., 404 Decatur St., Cumberland, MD, www.AdamsFamilyFuneralHome.com, on Thursday, April 30, 2026, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Services will follow at 1 p.m.
Interment will be in Maryland Veterans Cemetery at Rocky Gap.
Military honors will be accorded at the cemetery by the Post #13 Veterans Honor Guard.
