Westernport, Maryland - WESTERNPORT [mdash] R. Russell Carder, 82, of Westernport, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on Nov. 5, 2025.
Born Jan. 16, 1943, he was the son of the late Calvin Carder and Eleanor (Blubaugh) Carder Beeman. Russell was also preceded in death by his granddaughter, Carrie Carder; step-father, George Beeman; his brothers, Eston and Bobby; and his father and mother-in-law, Lloyd Broadwater and Martha (Rounds) Broadwater.
Russell retired from Westvaco as a supervisor of maintenance in the power center in 2005, at the age of 62.
He was a devoted husband to his wife, Dot, for 64 years, a loving father to his four children, a loving Pap to his nine grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren, with whom he enjoyed spending time, especially on the front porch, and having everyone gather for Sunday dinners. He took great pride in his farm for the last 60 years, raising cattle and various other farm animals, making hay with his family, as well as maintaining all the various jobs that go with caring for a farm.
Russell was truly a jack-of-all-trades; he was mechanically inclined, a carpenter, pipefitter, electrician, an amazing artist, and always ready to help anyone who needed something repaired. He enjoyed in-house activities, such as refurbishing an antique chair, making quilts, and baking the best apple pies from scratch.
His faith was strong; he walked and lived by Jesus, and was a kind, caring, and loving man. All those close to him knew what a strong soul he had.
He lived life as a simple man, based on honesty, humility, and love over material wealth. He had patience, contentment, and always advised his family and listeners to not get caught up in the rich man's worldly ways, but to live by the gospel.
Russell's family, friends, and devoted pets, Annie and Lucy, who were his constant companions, will deeply feel his absence, but his memory will continue to inspire them.
Russell is survived by his loving wife, Dorothy (Broadwater) Carder; his children, Dianna Carder of Keyser, W.Va.; James Russell "Jimmy" Carder and wife, Andrea, of Westernport; Tammera "Tammy" Wiland and husband, Richard, of Westernport; and Russell Jason Carder and his girlfriend, Tonya Perkins, of Westernport. He is also survived by his siblings, Betty Smith, of Westernport, and Eddie Carder of Keyser.
Russell cherished his grandchildren, Moriah Alexander and husband, David; Wayde Carder; Madison Wilson and husband, Travis; Steven Winebrenner; Adam Winebrenner; Samantha Wiland; Russell Carder Jackson II; and John Robert Patrick Jackson; and Cristen Hans and husband, Jeremiah. Russell was loved by his great grandchildren, Gracie, Morisah, Mac and Teagun Alexander, Ansen and Atticus Carder, Aubreigh, Braxten, Everleigh, Cambreigh, Brody and Finleigh Wilson, and Michael and Russell Hans.
Friends will be received at the Boal Funeral Home, Westernport, on Tuesday, Nov. 11, from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. A funeral service will follow the visitation at 4 p.m.
Family and friends are welcome to a dinner immediately following the service at the Trinity United Methodist Church social hall, Jones Street, Piedmont, W.Va.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to the WVU Cancer Center in memory of Russell.
