Reba Leota Shobe Obituary

Reba Leota (nee Nycum) Shobe, 93, of Hagerstown, passed peacefully in her sleep from Covid at Frederick Memorial Hospital on Saturday, March 6, 2021.

Reba was born on Sept. 25, 1927, in LaVale. The following family members preceded Reba: her husband, William Shobe; her parents, Lloyd and Amanda (nee Trail) Nycum; her brothers, Robert Nycum and George Nycum; her son, James Shobe; and her grandson, Michael Metzel.

She is survived by her daughter, Sheila Metzel, husband, Alan; her son, Donald Douglas "Doug" Shobe, wife, Joan O'Fallon; six granddaughters, Julie Shobe, Jennifer Richardson, husband, Andrew, Amanda Metzel, husband, Greg Bush, Anna Shobe, Samantha "Sami" Shobe, Mary Shobe; and one grandson, William Lloyd "Liam" Shobe; three great-granddaughters, Jessica Shobe, Jayma Wharton, Jasmine Thomas; and one great-grandson, Ian James Richardson; her daughter-in law, Judy Shobe Brewer; and granddaughter-in-law, Crista "Rhee" Long Metzel. Reba will be greatly missed by her honorary granddaughter, Taylor Jaco; her honorary grandson-in-law, Javier Jaco; and her honorary great-grandson, Elijah Jaco. Reba is also survived by her beloved dog, Ginger.

Reba resided in Maugansville from Dec. 23, 1951 until July 7, 2020. At that time, she became a resident of Somerford House assisted living in Frederick. Reba joined the Hagerstown Church of the Brethren in 1951. After 30.5 years of service, Reba retired from Ward Leonard/Angstrohm Precision/Vishay. Her proudest memory was making high precision electronic components for Skylab, NASA's first manned orbiting laboratory. Reba volunteered her time with many youth organizations: the Brownies, the Girl Scouts, the Cub Scouts, and 4-H. She taught Sunday school to 10 year olds at the Church of the Brethren.

She was a founding member of the Maugansville Firehouse Auxiliary, a charter member of the Maugansville Homemaker's Club, and a Life member of Beta Sigma Phi. She also volunteered for many senior citizen organizations, Maugansville Senior Citizen's Friendship Club, Post 42 American Legion Auxiliary, active in S.A.L.T. (Seniors and Lawmen Together), she had been a member of the AARP National Organization for over 40 years. She volunteered at the local veteran's clinic. Reba was a member of the "Golden Bulldogs."

Reba loved reading and traveling.

Reba's family is very grateful to Dr. David Warrow of Cumberland Valley Retina Consultants, the staff of Somerford House, Hospice and the staff of Frederick Memorial Hospital for the excellent care they provided Reba during the last months of her life.

While the family requests the omission of flowers, memorial donations in Reba's name may be made to Hospice of Frederick County, 516 Trail Ave., Frederick, MD 21701.

Visitation with the family will be held at Douglas A. Fiery Funeral Home, 1331 Eastern Blvd., North, Hagerstown, from 6 to 8 p.m. on Friday, March 12, 2021.

Services will be held at the gravesite in Cedar Lawn Memorial Park, Hagerstown, on Monday, March 15, 2021, at 11 a.m., Pastor Twyla Rowe of the Hagerstown Church of the Brethren will officiate.
