Richard Lee Sherwood ("Dick") Obituary

Richard Lee "Dick" Sherwood, born in 1948, passed from his earthly body and was graciously received into his heavenly home on Sunday, Jan. 8, 2023, after a valiant battle against heart disease and pulmonary fibrosis.

He was the son of the late E. Richard and Vera (Brady) Sherwood, 52 year husband of Rosanne "Susie" Sherwood, and brother of Deborah James. Also surviving are brother-in-law, Van Evans and wife; two nephews, one niece, many other relatives, and many good friends.

Dick was raised in Shallmar, and attended grade school and middle school in Kitzmiller. Upon graduating from Elk Garden High School in 1966, Dick left for his earlier three-year enlistment in the U.S. Army. He proudly served his country from 1966 through 1969 with with years overseas duty. Upon his return, he worked at Vepco, in Mount Storm, and Bausch & Lomb, in Oakland, before accepting a position with the Maryland State Highway Administration, in Accident, from which he retired as a heavy equipment operator and a mechanic. During this time, he was a student at Garrett Community College under the G.I. Bill.

Mr. Sherwood was a multiple gallon blood donor until health issues prevented him from giving. He had played short stop on the Mt. Top Old Timers Softball League, was a member of Accident's American Legion Post 0208, the Mountain Top Hunting Club, and a life member of the NRA.

With the help of friends, he built a retirement home in Maysville, where he and Susie have lived for 22 years and where his passions for hunting, fishing, ginsenging, trapping, enjoying Mother Nature, and building items from wood continued. He was a "jack of many trades and a master of none."

Dick was a gentle, sensitive, and caring man. Upon his passing, he became an organ and tissue donor.

A favorite charity was St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital, PO Box 50, Memphis, TN 38101.

Viewing will be at C & S Fredlock Funeral Home, P.A., in Kitzmiller, on Thursday, Jan. 12, 2023, from 10 a.m. to noon, with the service at noon, conducted by the Rev. Dr. Matthew Paugh and assisted by David Reel.

Interment will be in the I.O.O.F. Cemetery, Elk Garden.
