Fort Ashby, West Virginia - Robert Barton "Bob" Patterson, Sr., age 96, of Fort Ashby, W.Va., passed away peacefully at home on Sunday, June 23, 2024.

Born on a farm near Romney, W.Va., on May 19, 1928, to the late Ellis H. Patterson, Sr. and Gertrude F. (Sanders) Patterson, Bob was the youngest of eight children.

Besides his parents, Bob is preceded in death by his wife of 56 years, Joyce P. (Corbin) Patterson; his nephew, Lyle K. Hughes, whom he was a 35-year caregiver; his brothers, Howell, Woodrow, and Ellis Jr. Patterson; and his sisters, Maxine Sisler, Gyneth Hughes, Ruth Shumaker, and Fern Johns.

Bob joined the Navy at age 17 before graduating high school. He was a WWII Veteran serving on the USS General A.E. Anderson for two years and then in the Navy Reserves for five years. He was a life-time member of the Romney VFW Post 1101, Romney American Legion Post 91, and the Disabled American Veteran Chapter 9 of Keyser.

Bob was employed by BobMar Sports Shop and South Branch Distributors. He later became co-owner of B&L Sports Shop in Romney. He had also worked the Hughes Tree Farm on Beaver Run Rd. Bob loved planting his garden, hunting, fishing, and the WV Mountaineers.

Bob is survived by his children, Maticia J. Poland and husband Craig of Fort Ashby and Robert B. Patterson, Jr. and wife Kathy of Romney; his grandchildren, Amy Weaver and husband Anthony, CJ Poland and wife Nikki, Shayla Pancione and husband Orie, Kristin Cannon and husband Dave, Amanda Smith and husband Tim, and Kasey Smith and husband Wesson; his great-grandchildren, who were the apple of his eye, Adyn, Alyn, Albyn, and Alyjah Weaver, Brayan and Brantley Poland, Karsyn and Camden Cannon, Ryker, Reece, and Rynn Pancione, Mesa and Memphis Smith, and Cooper and Kamrie Smith. His legacy will live on through his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Bob is also survived by his brothers-in-law, Albert Corbin and Randy Manning; his sister-in-law, Connie Reisinger; his nephews, Michael Corbin and Rich Patterson; and his niece, Patty Wygal.

The family would like to sincerely thank the Veterans Home Bound Care and WVU Hospice for their loving care and support, as well as Pastor Wes Beahm and Shaffer Funeral Home.

Friends will be received on Friday, June 28, 2024, from 4 p.m. till 5 p.m., at Shaffer Funeral Home in Romney. Services will immediately follow, at 5 p.m., with Pastor Wes Beahm officiating.

Interment will be at Ebenezer Cemetery in Romney with military honors accorded by the US Navy Honor Guard.
