Ronald (Ron) Boyd Obituary

Cumberland, MD - CUMBERLAND [mdash] Ronald (Ron) Boyd, 80, of Cumberland, passed away peacefully on Thursday, Jan. 1, 2026, at home, after a long battle with cancer.

Born Aug. 20, 1945, in Salem, Oregon, he was a son of the late Donald and Corinne (Gornick) Boyd.

Ron was a 1963 graduate of Central High School in Monmouth, Oregon. He graduated from Oregon State University in 1967, receiving a B.S. degree and completing their ROTC program as the Distinguished Military Graduate.

He was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the U.S. Army Medical Service Corps. Within a year, he was deployed to Vietnam, serving in the Ninth Infantry Division at a remote forward fire base in the Mekong Delta as a Medical Platoon Leader.

While in Vietnam, he received a Bronze Star, four Battle Stars, and the Combat Medical Badge. His Army career spanned 21 years, taking him around the world. He earned his Masters Degree in business administration from Boston University while stationed in Nuremberg, Germany.

Upon retirement from the military, he was awarded the Legion of Merit, the highest non-combat medal in the United States Army. His post military career included working with the military's TRICARE program in California and locally in Western Maryland with provider relations for Maryland Physicians Care.

In his younger years while stationed in Germany, he enjoyed skiing in the Alps, river kayaking, and traveling through Europe.

He was an unabashed "nerd" his entire life, loving comic books, video games, and all things science fiction and fantasy. He had an intense love of world and human history, and was a walking encyclopedia of the American Civil War.

Always the handyman, Ron enjoyed fixing everything in the house, taking on construction and landscaping jobs Suzanne requested, and helping his sons with remodeling jobs in their homes.

After retirement, Ron spent his days reading science fiction novels, keeping tabs on the stock market, playing his favorite computer games, and relaxing by the pool listening to his curated playlists.

One of Ron's main interests was genealogy, with his legacy being a 200-page family anthology that he wrote and finished just before his death, narrating his family's history.

Ron is survived by his wife, Suzanne (Krampf) Boyd; sons, Jonathan (Debra) Boyd and Eric (Allison) Boyd; and three grandchildren, Audrey, Elliot and Natalie Boyd; and one brother, Larry Boyd.

In accordance with his wishes, he will be cremated.

A private graveside service with military honors will be held at Rocky Gap Veterans Cemetery. A celebration of Ron's life will be held at their home at a later date for family and friends.
