Rose Alice (Broad) Szwast Obituary

Cresaptown, Maryland - Rose Alice (Broad) Szwast, 85, of Cresaptown, Md., passed away on Tuesday, Jan. 14, 2025, at Mountain City Center Nursing Home, Frostburg, Md.

Born June 27, 1939, in Mundy's Corner, Pa., she was the daughter of the late William and Margaret (Seth) Broad. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Anthony Szwast, Sr.; four sisters, Theresa Witt, Maryellen Broad, Margaret Dugan, and Rita Fye; and four brothers, Joseph, Bernie, Robert and Thomas Broad.

Rose worked as a nurse for a while in Johnstown, Pa., and retired as a "Domestic Engineer" to raise her family. She was a member of the Saint Ambrose Catholic Church Ladies Club and Choir. She loved making Raggedy Ann and Andy dolls for friends and church bazaar raffles, and playing bingo and board games with friends and relatives.

She is survived by her brother, James Broad and wife Peggy, of Cresson, Pa.; three sons, Joe and John Szwast, of Cresaptown, and Lieutenant Commander Anthony Szwast, Jr. and wife Hilda, of Tucson, Ariz.; four grandchildren, Peter Gerard Szwast, wife Elizabeth, and expected great-granddaughter, Nora Ann, of Knoxville, Tenn., Eileen and husband Dylan Hearth and Margaret and husband Giovani Thomas, of Charleston, S.C., Nicholas Anthony Szwast, Seminarian, of Boynton Beach, Fla.; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Friends will be received at the Scarpelli Funeral Home, P.A., 15205 McMullen Hwy SW, Cresaptown, Md., on Sunday, Jan. 26, 2025, from 4 to 7 p.m.

Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at Saint Patrick Church, 201 N Centre Street, Cumberland, Md., on Monday, Jan. 27, 2025, at 11 a.m.

Interment will be in Restlawn Memorial Gardens, LaVale, Md.

The family would like to thank Mountain City Center Nursing Home, UPMC, and the Cresaptown Fire Department for doing a great job taking care of Rose. We would also like to thank Mary Jane Bittinger and Roseann Bennett for assisting with her care.
