Carpendale, WV - Shirley Mae Squires, 92, of Carpendale, W.Va., passed away March 1, 2026, at UPMC Western Maryland.

She was born Dec. 12, 1933, in Springfield, W.Va., to the late John and Margaret Taylor. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, John H. Squires; a son, Timothy M. Squires; and all of her siblings, Anna Taylor, D. Mike Taylor, Marion G. Sachs and Elva Jean Jamison.

Shirley graduated from Fort Hill High School. She loved being a cheerleader and dated a football player, John H. Squires, who she married not long after graduation and enjoyed over 40 years together until his passing in 1995.

She was a dedicated homemaker, raising her two sons. She was an avid bowler with the ladies' league at White Oaks Lanes. Shirley was artistically gifted, making many things, such as ceramics, charcoal drawings, dolls, greeting cards, and the list keeps going. Her humor will be remembered by many; and she would write excellent short limericks.

Surviving are her son, John R. Squires and wife Judy; grandchildren, John D. Squires and wife Jill, Becki Caesar, Catherine Garcia, Frank "Mickey" Grudzinski and wife Melissa, Teresa Grudzinski, and Aimee Lynch and husband T.J.; great-grandchildren, Peyton, Gabby, Jackson, Gabe, Mateo, Madison, Aidan, Jeffrey, Gavin and Zachary; and her large extended family.

Visitation will be Friday, March 6, 2026, from 10 to 11:30 a.m. at Scarpelli Funeral Home, P.A., 15205 McMullen Hwy. SW, Cresaptown, MD. A funeral service will immediately follow, with the Rev. Harold McClay officiating.

Interment will be with her husband in Sunset Memorial Park, Cumberland, Md.

The family would like to extend their sincere gratitude to her niece and best friend Mitzie S. Bowman for her loving care and companionship over the years, and the staff at the Cumberland Commons for their dedication to her comfort and well-being during her stay.
