William K. Alt Obituary
formerly of Ridgeley, WV - William "Bill" Kermit Alt, formerly of Ridgeley, W.Va., died May 5, 2025 at Arden Courts., Annandale, Va.
Born December 30, 1937 in Keyser, W.Va., he was the son of the late William and Catherine (Pratt) Alt.
He was also preceded in death by his beloved wife of over 50 years, Mary (Offutt) Alt, and his sister, Judith Keene.
Bill was a graduate of West Virginia University, earning Bachelor of Science degrees in Chemistry and Mathematics. After graduation, newly married Bill and his wife Mary moved to Aberdeen Proving Grounds where he served in the United States Army Chemical Corps.
Upon discharge from the Army, Bill and Mary, along with their newborn daughter Lynn, moved to Freeport, Ill. Here Bill began employment at Kelly-Springfield Tire Company as a chemist and was also responsible for the initial set up of the laboratory. He was eventually promoted to chief chemist.
Bill had a second daughter, Julie, while living in Freeport. After both of his girls graduated, he and Mary moved to Cumberland, MD where Bill eventually retired from Kelly-Springfield, working his later years at the Corporate Headquarters
He had been a member of Keyser Presbyterian Church, the American Chemical Society and was active in veterans' organizations. Through the Allegany Historical Society, Mr. Alt and his wife led tours
of the Allegany Museum.
In his spare time, Bill enjoyed playing golf, reading and doing crossword puzzles. He was the proud owner of numerous first place golf trophies from his participation throughout the years in the Kelly-Springfield golf league.
Bill found immense joy spending time with his grandchildren. As his health declined, stories of his grandchildren and great-granddaughter lit up his day.
Survivors include his daughters, Lynn (Jim) Howard and Julie (Alex) Levine; grandchildren, Brian Howard, Kelsey Howard, Jamie Howard, Owen Levine, and Charlotte Levine; great granddaughter, Remy Howard; and several nephews and nieces.
A funeral service will be held at the Upchurch Funeral Home, P.A., Cumberland, on Monday, May 12th. at 11 a.m., with Rev. John Daya, OFM, Cap, officiating..
Interment will follow in SS. Peter and Paul Cemetery.
