William David Klavuhn Obituary

Cumberland, Maryland - William "Bill" David Klavuhn, 75, of Cumberland, Md., passed away Oct. 15, 2025, at the Cumberland Healthcare Center.

Born on Dec. 27, 1949, in Cumberland, he was the son of the late Catherine (Troutman) and William Klavuhn. He was preceded in death by his wife, Lois Klavuhn.

Bill graduated from Allegany High School in 1967. He continued his education at Allegany Community College, where he also wrote for the school newspaper as a sports reporter. Upon graduation in 1970, he gained employment as a clerk at the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) in Washington, D.C. In late 1972, Bill was drafted and served his country honorably for three years at Fort Dix in New Jersey as an Army SP5 (Specialist 5). After graduation, Bill obtained employment with the U.S. Postal Service and worked in the Cumberland office until his retirement in 2012.

Bill was a lifelong sports fan. His favorite teams included the Allegany Campers, Maryland Terrapins, Pittsburgh Pirates, Washington Redskins and the Pittsburgh Steelers. Bill and his brother-in-law Joe witnessed the Immaculate Reception by Franco Harris live on TV on Dec. 23, 1972, in a playoff game against the Oakland Raiders. This play represented the start of the Steelers' successful run in the 1970s. On Friday, Sept. 28, 1978, Bill also attended, with Joe, the Friday night doubleheader against the Philadelphia Phillies, trailing by three games in the National League East Division with four games remaining in the baseball season. The Pirates needed to sweep the Phillies in order to win it. The Pirates won both very exciting games in the bottom of the ninth inning to move within one game of the Phillies with two remaining in the season. Unfortunately, they lost the next game 10-8 to spoil their postseason hopes. The following year, 1979, they won the World Series. Bill was also extremely happy with the Pittsburgh Steelers and Washington Redskins winning numerous NFL championships and with the many state football and basketball champions for Allegany High School.

Bill is survived by three sisters, Judi (husband Bob, deceased) Moran of Honolulu, Carole Ashtiany (Ebi) of Arlington, Va., and Debra (Joe) Laco of Cresaptown, Md.; nieces and nephews, Lenee Laco, Melanie (Nate) Twigg, Mark Moran, Kara (Francois) Rey, Alexander (Jazmine) Ashtiany; one uncle, Chuck (Naomi) Troutman; numerous great-nephews and nieces; and many cousins.

Bill will be greatly missed by friends and family alike. A special thank you goes to the Cumberland Healthcare Center for their six years of care for Bill and the UPMC Western Maryland Schwab Cancer Center for their continuing efforts in fighting Bill's cancer.

At his request, Bill will be cremated. Arrangements are being handled by the Adams Family Funeral Home, P.A., Decatur St., Cumberland, MD.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 25, 2025, with friends and relatives received one hour prior. Military honors will be accorded at the funeral home by the Post #13 Veterans Honor Guard.
