CUMBERLAND — William “Bill” Gladstone Robertson Jr., 79, of Cumberland, passed away Thursday, Aug. 4, 2011, at the Western Maryland Regional Medical Center. Born June 16, 1932, in Barton, Mr. Robertson was the son of the late William Gladstone Robertson Sr., and Arminta Marion (Thrasher) Robertson. He was also preceded in death by an infant son, Carey Robertson. Bill graduated from Barton High School, class of 1950, where he won the Babe Ruth Award. He was a United States Naval veteran from 1952 to 1954 stationed in Norfolk, Va., and served in Naples, Italy. Bill played the tenor drum for the Blue Angels Drum and Bugle Corps of Westernport. Before joining the military, Bill worked for the B & O Railroad and served his apprenticeship as a Carman. When the Bolton Forge closed, he then worked as a Carman until 1987 at which time he retired. Bill was a member of the Barton American Legion Post 189 where he served as past Commander. He was also a member of the Faraday Post 24 American Legion, Frostburg. Bill was a member of the LaVale United Methodist Church. Bill was a beautiful wood worker where he and his wife, Jan, had Robertson’s Wood and Crafts. Together, they did craft shows and supplied several craft stores in the area. They also raised Himalayan kittens for 18 years. Bill had a special place in his heart for Shadow and Shawna, his canine friends, along with helping them with the new babies when they were born. Bill fought a hard battle to live but his heart was just too weak to carry on. He was a very caring and loving person, husband, father, and grandfather. Bill is survived by his wife of 24 years, Jan (Mills) Robertson; his son, William J. Robertson and his wife Linda, of Cumberland; his daughter, Lynn (Robertson) Connor and her husband James, of Hagerstown; his stepchildren, Michael Clark and his wife Barb, of Wiley Ford, W.Va., Donald Clark and his wife Lisa, of Cumberland, and Tracie Lynn (Clark) Hershberger and her husband Harold, of Falling Waters, W.Va.; his brother, Carlton Robertson and his wife Alleda, of Barton; and his sister, Sandra Kay (Robertson) Cosgrove and her husband Marty, of Waldorf. Bill is also survived by his granddaughters, Heather (Robertson) Link and her husband Tony, of Berkeley Springs, W.Va., Jamie Lynn (Connor) Semler and her husband Aaron, of Hagerstown, and Jessica (Connor) Albrite and her husband Bradley, of Woodstock, Va.; his grandson, James Connor, of Hagerstown; as well as four great-grandchildren; five stepgrandchildren; one niece, and four nephews. Friends will be received at the Adams Family Funeral Home P.A., 404 Decatur St., Cumberland, (www.AdamsFamilyFuneralHome.com) on Monday, Aug. 8, 2011, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. A funeral service will be conducted in the funeral home on Tuesday, Aug. 9, 2011, at 10 a.m. with the Rev. Harold McClay officiating. Interment will be in the Maryland State Veterans Cemetery at Rocky Gap. Military honors will be accorded at the cemetery by the Faraday Post 24 American Legion Honor Guard.
